Schweich became the second-highest ranking official in the U.S. State Department as Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of State and Acting Assistant Secretary of State at the Bureau for International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs. From dozens of countries, and with a budget of more than 2.5 million, Thomas Schweich directed four thousand people. Afterwards, he was appointed the Coordinator for Counternarcotics and Justice Reform by President George W. Bush.
